Human Rights Violations in Peru?

By Terry Sebastian - 9 months ago

As recent tension and violence escalates in Peru, Indigenous people are on edge and wondering about the future of their livelihood.

Last week serious violence erupted in Peru when many protestors - some carrying spears and machetes, launched their fight over President Alan Garcia’s Free Trade Agreement with the USA.

Hundreds may be dead or missing in the country’s worst violence in decades. It is a media battle now with both sides launching aggressive publicity campaigns.

A Cover-up has been claimed by the Indigenous groups as rumours abound that police have hidden bodies of the massacre, and Aid Organizations cannot get into the country to investigate.

The Government has denied any claims of Human Rights Violations and they say the police were the victims of the illegal protests, acts of savagery and torture.

The campaigners have pledged to not back down on their fight for the Amazon which has been slated for massive Oil and Gas exploration.

The Free Trade Agreement has been claimed to be written without formal or informal consultation of the Indigenous people who inhabit the land.
