Radio Silence
From time to time, I've touched on some of the online resources available for media training in a rather modest effort to collect some of them under one roof. The impact, albeit largely "potential impact" so far, has been fully explored yet. Cell phones and computers have revolutionized how journalism is practiced arund the world.
But in different corners of the globe, where journalism is rebuilding or struggling under the weight of censorship and few resources, the number of online training tools holds great potential for leveling the playing field, so to speak, so that anybody, anywhere can access top-notch tools to strengthen journalism.
Here are a few of the latest to surface, some of which touch on multimedia reporting and one on writing to deadline:
-A guide from the BBC on digital storytelling (There are useful tools here even for journalists in regions that do not have access to advanced digital equipment)
- From Mashable, 10 tips for journalists to use social media tools
-Lastly, a tool called "Write or Die" (a title that is perhaps insensitive towards those journalists who are working in dangerous regions). It allows journalists to practice writing to deadline by timing their story-writing. The program is supposed to be here, but the link isn't working right now and I can't track down a functioning one. So I'll be optimistic and hope that link is fixed. In the meantime you can learn more about it here.
Thanks to j-source.ca for leads on these latest tools.
Previous Radio Silence Posts have touched on other tools that have been emerging that can be of use to journalists anywhere:
A YouTube Reporters Centre and the Reuters guide book available for free online
A guidebook on multimedia reporting and more on YouTube reporting resources
And lastly a look at what role some of these tools can play in boosting media training efforts.
